The experienced lock raised a foot injury to England two weeks ago, which forced him to miss the game in Paris.
Springboks said earlier this week that Etzebeth would return to full training after recovering his injury but a decision as to whether he will meet Scotland in Edinburgh will only be done later this week.
If declared, Etzebeth fits in the No. 4 shirt, with Pieter-Steph du Toit moving to the blindside flank and Duane Vermeulen to number 8 instead of the injured Warren Whiteley.
Whiteley is in doubt for Scotland test due to a calf question.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will name his team on Thursday, with Saturday's roll at Murrayfield scheduled for 19:20 (SA time).
