England captain Joe Root suggested Windies bowler Shannon Gabriel said something he "might regret" during an on-field exchange in the third Test.

Root seemed to tell Gabriel that "there is nothing wrong with being gay" while clapping day three in St Lucia, with the comments apparently taken on television via the stub microphone.

Gabriel's part of the conversation did not seem to be audible, but the Press Association Sport understands that the Trinidadian paceman was spoken by at least one of the field judges, Kumar Dharmasena and Rod Tucker, about his language.

Root enjoyed a nice day on the curl, scored a 16th century and didn't finish 111 when England built a lead of 448 runs – but after leaving, the field was asked to explain the chatter with Gabriel.

He spoke in measured terms and said, "It's the test cricket, he's an emotional guy trying to do everything he can to win a test match.

"Sometimes people say things on the ground that they can regret, but they must stay on the ground.

"He is a good guy who plays hard cricket and is proud to be in the position he is. The fight was a great competition, he has a wonderful series and he must be proud."

Windie's coach Richard Pybus was unaware of any potential controversy near the game but told BBC: "Nothing has been reported to me, but if a comment was made, we will review it, and if not, we will deal with it."
