Eagle AXS brings a similar wireless operation and electric motor shift that is enjoyed on eTap road groups to Eagle's 12-speed mountain bike platform. The alleged benefits are many, including a strong and precise shifting experience through the motorized derailleur action, a more intuitive and energy-saving gear steering and gear cable freedom. As Eagle is a single chainring-focused drive system, only two components underwent the AXS redesigned – the rear derailleur and the shifter. All the other parts remain identical to the mechanical version of Eagle except for the new colors.
Eagle AXS XX1 vs Eagle AXS X01
At launch, Eagle AXS will be available on SRAM's XX1 and X01 specification level group sets.
The Eagle AXS XX1 The groupset employs exciting saving materials such as a carbon derailleur cage and titanium hardware and is available in an oil slick looking rainbow colorway. The XX1 group is marketed as being suitable for cross-country skiing and light skiing.
The Eagle AXS XO1 The groupet with forged aluminum cage and stainless steel hardware is said to perform better with more aggressive trail and enduro riding styles. It is available in a black and polar (powder gray) color line
The controllers appear to be similar across groups XX1 and X01.
Eagle AXS Derailleur
The Eagle AXS derailleur is the core of the new Eagle group sets. SRAM boasts that the electronic freelance driver gives the rider faster, more consistent shifts and can operate effectively under heavier loads than his mechanical counterparts.
Apart from the lack of cables jumping out the back, the battery is the most notable addition to the Eagle AXS derailleur. The battery is hot-swappable with the Reverb AXS battery and even the newly launched RED eTap AXS road groupet batteries. The battery is said to last between 20 and 25 hours depending on your switching habits. The battery is removed for charging by releasing a single clip. The charging time is supposedly one hour.
Eagle AXS derailleur has SRAM's type 3 roller bearing clutch for chain management. Due to the different dynamics and forces of mountain biking, the recently announced Orbit fluid coupling is only applied to road tracks.
The Eagle AXS derailleur has a smart impact protection system called Overload Clutch. In the event of a load, the motor is interrupted, which allows the latch to move more freely. This helps protect the engine system from hard forces as well as the bucket body and the attached bracket. After the impact, the latch is designed to return to the position it was in its turn, creating a hassle-free experience for the rider.
The derailleur cage is also 10mm farther from the ground than the mechanical eagle derailleur, giving more clearance to avoid colliding with objects on the track.
Eagle AXS Controller
The Eagle AXS controller throws conventional mountain bikes that change out of the window. In fact, the word controller has replaced the shifter in SRAM's marketing material. With wireless communication there are no cables, homes or wires. The result is a whole new ergonomic experience with the riders pushing the buttons on the controller to operate the lock.
The control panel touchpoints can be customized through the AXS three-function app available: indoor shift, outboard shift and drop-off activation. There is also a paddle on the front of the controller near your index knob, which can be used to make quick shifts without lifting a finger from the handlebar. SRAM marks the "secret sprint paddle".
The Eagle AXS controller is powered by a CR2032 clock battery, which according to SRAM's requirements should last most people for up to 2 years.
What is AXS?
AXS (pronounced "access" to accessibility) promises integration between SRAM's bike components, smartphones, sensors and bike computers. AXS provides this broad compatibility of devices by supporting eTAP, Bluetooth and ANT +. In addition, all AXS-enabled components will talk to each other.
SRAM's new AXS wireless system is not defined by riding types. It is happy to cut and change as the riders see fit. All components with the AXS label will be able to communicate and function with each other. This means that the Eagle AXS parts, and even the Reverb AXS drop post, will work with RED eTap AXS road components.
But there are some mechanical obstacles. The cassette, the back cover and the chain must come from the same group set. For example, you might want to build a gravel bike with an Eagle AXS derailleur, cassette and chain with RED eTap shifters on drops. ETap shifters can then control the Eagle AXS derailleur. You can even throw in a Reverb AXS drop chair post that can be activated using eTap shifters.
The AXS App allows for a deep degree of personalization via your smartphone. From the app you can change the operation of the components and controls, get maintenance reminders, update the firmware and see the battery status. The app is available for both Android and iOS.
Reverb AXS is a wireless electronic dropper insert. The position is activated by a controller similar to the Eagle AXS controller.
The new Reverb has seen some upgrades internally. A new internal floating piston and lubrication design is said to reduce friction, reduce the force needed to press the saddle and improve the actuation speed. There is also a vent valve that can be used to separate air and oil that may interfere with chambers. This improves performance and removes the crooked post without additional service.
Like all AXS components, Reverb AXS communicates with other AXS labeled parts. As mentioned before, this allows both Eagle AXS and RED eTap AXS components to control the Reverb AXS drop record.
The Reverb AXS uses a SRAM battery (the same as the Eagle AXS and Red eTap AXS) for battery discharge while the controller is powered by a standard CR2032 battery.

Know before you go
Checking the battery life is easy: Press the button on the derailer. Green light means that it is at or near full charge. Red light means that it is at or near half charge. And flashing red means charging it. Or throw on another because keeping an extra is easy and realistic. To extend battery life, the system goes into power save mode when the bike is stationary.
Yes, it's waterproof
The Eagle AXS system is completely water and dustproof to IP69K international standard. Initially developed for construction vehicles and food cleaning, the IP69K standard validates systems that require regular pressure cleaning. For a mountain biker, it means no hesitation in going out when the weather looks less than ideal.
Eagle AXS Impact Protection
