2018 has been a solid year for players, which made the vote for the Golden Joystick Ultimate Game of the Year, all the more shattering.
This year, the coveted title was awarded Fortnite Battle Royale.
Surprised? You should not be. Fortnite have logged a lot of 8.3 million simultaneous players, with 78.3 million players playing in a month alone.
Given the amount of attention the game has received – from a monopoly version to parents paying for Fortnite tutorials – it was undoubtedly expected to rank high on the Golden Joystick list.

However, position # 1 shared social media players. While some defended the award, the second game was called the result of the mother-in-law of 10-year-olds who voted. One player went as far as comparing Fortnite winning best game to Taylor Swift composing a symphony rivaling Beethoven s moonlight sonata.
Lmfao children must decide who wins these awards. #Fortnite just won the ultimate game of the year #GoldenJoysticks . Over a game that was better in any shape, way or shape. Ps. Talking about # GodOfWar4. What a damn joke.

Die-hard fans defended Fortnite s win, engage in a social media battle royal commending game. Proud players noted it deserving, gracious and worthy to win the Ultimate Game of the Year for unprecedented challenges.
earn it? because it was insanely popular, but nothing is fortunate because epic games belong to society, and everything they've done to the game is thanks to society, while obesity is just a multiplayer game with loving characters

I see, one of those hipsters who think it's cool to hate Fortnite because it's very successful and small children and non-players like to play it. Fortnite is updated weekly and Epic Games literally puts hundreds of millions into their eSports and everything.

The annual Golden Joystick Prize created a debate on what constitutes an award-winning game. The prize was strongly criticized for being a popular competition, favoring the number of players over game and game innovation.
Many believed that there were other games released in 2018 more deserving of awards, two of them came close to taking the chandelier. Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4gave Fortnite a run for their money that takes second and third positions respectively.
Many other games were also cleaned at the awards ceremony; God of war won the best story, Subnautica awarded best PC games and Forza Horizon 4 took out the Xbox game of the year.
Other remarkable former winners of the prestigious Ultimate Game of the Year award include Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dark Souls, Grand Theft Auto and The Oldest Scroll.
