Friday, November 16 at 20:13: Lidl continues his expansion course in the United States. The German counter counter takes over 27 stores on the regional supermarket chain Best Market in the states of New York and Jersey, as the US headquarters in Lidl announced on Friday. Information about the purchase price was not made.
Lidl opened its first store in the United States in June 2016 and now has more than 50 stores. They are all located on the east coast.
At the same time, Aldi, which has been active in the United States since 1976, is strengthening a heavily expanded branch network. Currently, Aldi has more than 1800 stores in the United States, spread over 35 of the 50 states. By the end of 2022, Aldi wants 2500 stores in the United States.
Aldi stores in the US are owned by Aldi Süd, while Aldi Nord owns the Traders Joe chain, which, like the parent company, specializes in cheap food.
Experts see German discounters as dangerous competition for the US market leader. Food is generally much more expensive in the United States than in Germany.
