The film "Doctor Zhivago" (with Omar Sharif in the lead role) is a classic. In 2011, American composer Lucy Simon from the Russian Revolutionary Romance (novel Boris Pasternak) also made a musical. From April 2019, the Austrian premiere will take place in Gmundner Stadttheater at Musical Spring – and musical fans from home and abroad already draw tickets.
"The audience's interest is huge"
Just like previous years, director Wolfgang Olzinger, music player Caspar Richter and actress Elisabeth Sikora are stringent. The trio started the musical spring five years ago and has steadily increased since then. After eight sold-out performances of "Jane Eyre" in the last season, ten performances of "Doctor Zhivago" are planned from April 11, 2019. This time there is also the possibility of more evenings.
The musical spring is now a fixture in the international stage. "We have made a name for ourselves with historically-romantic European pieces," said Caspar Richter. "Guests from abroad know what is waiting for them on Traunsee, and the interest is huge."
The musical spring has a budget of about 200,000 euros. "Elsewhere we work with much higher budgets," says Wolfgang Olzinger. "We can only do that because we all do more moves, from scendesign to press relations, we do everything ourselves."
However, the game would not be financed with admission fees alone. Traunsee Tourism and the municipality participate in the costs. For the tourism industry, the musical is an opportunity to increase the bed occupancy during pre-treatment. The City Hall, in turn, fulfills a cultural mission. "We are not only proud of the international success of Musical Spring," said Vice President Stefan Krapf. "This is also an excellent cultural offer Gmundner himself – especially for our youth."
