Sean Waltman remembers & # 39; Mean & # 39; Gene Okerlund opens up all the elite thrust and destroys kingdom 13

Sean "X-Pac" Waltman was on X-Pac 12360 Podcast This week discusses a wide variety of topics, including the transition to "Mean" Gene Okerlund, as well as giving his thoughts on the launch of All Elite Wrestling. He also took the time to inform about the appearance of Becky Lynch and Wrestle Kingdom's 13 main event between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kenny Omega.

Here are a few highlights from the episode that can be seen below (h / t Denise Salcedo for transcription):

Sean Waltman about the life of "Mean" Gene Okerlund:

"And then I came to see him (Gene Okerlund) mostly when he jumped; in the great emigration from AWA when Vince {McMahon} went in there and cherry picked talent. It was Mean Gene, it was obviously Hulk { Hogan}, Vince took Mad Dog Vachon just for good measure … But I think Mean Gene was one of the bigger hits that Verne {Gagne} took when he lost talent, it was one of those big hits he took … I mean goddam, everyone really loved Mean Gene …. He was good at his job but not everyone he interviewed was great at talking and I was one of them [laughs]"

Waltman looks forward to Tanahashi vs Omega in Wrestle Kingdom 13:

"They both need it. {IWGP Heavyweight Championship} And I see this when you look at that video, Kennys Search, If you don't know much about it all, it explains it a lot. This is a generation thing, Father loves Tanahashi, and the little child is a Kenny Omega fan, so it's a bit of what we're talking about here. I love the style of talking, the two did back and forth with each other, about styles and philosophies of wrestling. It's fascinating to me how they talk about wrestling and & # 39; my style is better than your style & # 39;. I love it. I fight love it. "

Waltman congratulates the launch of AEW and faces potential critics:

"One less [thing] And I don't know if it's a concern, does it lose some of the punk rock feel? You get what I say? We do this ourselves, but we hope that the enthusiasm will remain because everyone complains that we need another big player in the industry. So please support it … not suddenly & oh that is not the cool thing because everyone else is going to see it too. & # 39; It's not so much of underdog when you get millions behind you … and it's not like & # 39; we just have to start this company from scratch and suddenly here it is. "There is this story and all that work that was done … And now you see everyone as okay headline," Davey Boy Smith Jr. separated by MLW, so and then signs with Impact, so and so this "everyone claims a claim," we gobble up the guys we'd like on our team "… One thing I have to say about this about All Elite Wrestling is so many people in the industry that are confident that they know how it is done, everyone jumps in, I see & # 39; so and then advice, this person has advice "So nice of you and your advic e but these guys have come together because they just went their own way. Not that you do not want to advise, but filter it, it can be good for someone, but someone else … Just want them well and take the jaw out of the way. "
