Bacteria and mental health
Anxiety, depression and autism have been attributed to the mixture of bacteria present or absent in the digestive systems of the affected people. In a study published in Belgium, it is claimed that patients diagnosed with depression lacked certain types of bacteria. The studies continue to develop treatments and mechanisms for bacterial reconstruction of the intestines.

Institutions from the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have worked together in a program to draw a map of all the bacteria present in the human digestive system. So far, researchers have cataloged 273 different bacterial species. They hope that their research, like the Human Genome Project, will lead to a comprehensive understanding of bacterial functions.

The use of probiotics
Taking probiotic foods to promote a "good flora" when a healthy intestinal microbiota is already available has been discouraged by several scientific studies. Fiber-containing foods (fruits such as bananas and vegetables such as onions, garlic and asparagus) and whole grains are good prebiotics for many types of bacteria.
