General-kinfe-Dagnew-in-CourtNovember 15, 2018 – Major General Kinfe Dagnew, former chief of Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC), was in the federal supreme court's 10th crime bench today. He has said that he has requested that the court be appointed as a lawyer to represent him. However, the court rejected Major's request for a defense attorney.

Major General Kinfe told the court yesterday that he can not afford to pay for a defense consultant. He said he received 4 000 birr as income and requested that he be appointed a public defense force.

However, the police told the court today that they have evidence that General Kinfe Dagnew deposited and deducted 100,000 Birr from their bank account between 24/10/2010 and 29/10/2018.

In contrast to the public prosecutor, the police also presented evidence features owned by Director General Kinfe – an 80,000-birr vehicle, a house in Bishoftu City and various shares in companies.

The court interrupted the next hearing until 19 November 2018.

However, the court accepted a request from Fitsum Yeshitila, another respondent and former employee of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), to obtain a general defender.

She is accused of getting 954,770 birr from tMETEC in an illegal sponsorship agreement.

In another development, Yared Zerihun, former deputy head of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) and the Commissioner for the Federal Police Commission, appeared in court today.

He was detained in police yesterday in Dukem, about 30 km south of Addis Ababa.

Likewise, chief Gudeta Olana, chief of security department at Ethio-telecom, has been arrested by the police.
