In Germany and other European countries, artists today want to symbolically proclaim the "European Republic".
It should be read throughout Europe on at least 150 theater balconies and public places a manifesto. In this, political scientist Ulrike Guérot and author Robert Menasse explain that "the nations of Europe" have failed to demand citizens' sovereignty instead. In Germany, the Red City Hall in Berlin is the proclamation site. Additional measures take place in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne.
The project aims to sensitize the public to the idea of pan-European democracy and statehood. The reason is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and almost simultaneously the proclamation of Republics in different European countries.
