Oscar winning director Steve McQueen has told him how he was "honored" to work with two of Ireland's premier actors, Liam Neeson and Colin Farrell, in the upcoming thriller Widows.

The film tells about a group of women practicing a heist after their criminal husband was killed in a police run.

Neeson plays one of the spouses (his wife Veronica Rawlins, played by Viola Davis) while Farrell plays Irish-American politician Jack Mulligan.

"Liam and Colin, they are amazing actors, and they have done a great job in Hollywood for a very long time," said McQueen, who also directed 12 years slave.

"I was honored that I could work with them, especially in Chicago where there is such an Irish reason."

McQueen was particularly impressed by Farrell, who improvised many of the scenes with his father, Robert Duvall.

"Robert Duvall and Colin were so amazing to work with. They were like two musicians, just jamming," he told RTE Entertainment.

"Many of the things they would engage in in the picture were improvised."

Äns, which will be released later this month, has received almost universal positive praise from critics and currently has a rating of 96 pc on the film review site Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie – as McQueen wrote with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn – also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Daniel Kaluuya and Elizabeth Debicki.

Meanwhile, a new trailer for another of Neese's upcoming movies has just been released.

Ballymena's native star comes with Brendan Gleeson, Tom Waits and James Franco in the new six-part anthology, The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.

Each chapter in the film tells another story about the American West.

It has already seen the award for the best manuscript at the Venice Film Festival.
