An amazing show and a musical adventure to experiment. / Repro Photos DR
During the nineteen years that the group has filmed, Hilight Tribe breaks the boundaries with its live Natural Trance that crosses trance music, licking electronic effects and roots of world music. The combination of five musicians on stage and an audio engineer began a tour in March 2018, which ends in India in December.
The tribe made a stopover in Agen, Florida, November 17, 21, and intends to use its communicative energy to create an osmosis with the public.
A natural trance, striking, without the need for illegal substances. A truly exceptional show and a musical adventure usually.
Interview with Ludo, one of the founders of the group, living in northern Ibiza as two other members of the tribe. The combo also happens twice a year in Ibiza, including the famous hippie market Las Dalias.
How do you define your musical stream?
It is dynamic "Natural Trance". It's sporty on stage! We all play around twenty traditional instruments. String instruments and percussions from all over the world like djembes, didgeridoo, congas, sitar, dungchen … but with drums, bass and guitar. In our songs we cover old themes, the tribes of West Africa, but they may be Andalusian accents, influences of Shaivite India, Sioux Indian culture … Each piece has a sound of a specific culture that we explore, like the drums of the Lakota Indians . And we participate in our compositions and arrangements, new technologies and electrical sounds. Styles are mixed between present and tribal music. Each song has its own universe. The idea is to restore feelings to the public.
Have you cut all these countries to deeply feed these cultures?
We traveled, but some musicians also came to us. For each album as the last "Temple of the Temple" or for each title, we try to soak up cultures, to learn the language.
Can you talk about musical mixing to define the mixture of influences?
Let's say that we initially found world music (world music) incarnated by Peter Gabriel and his musician senegalese and pakistanais. But the difference is that our producer of the time, Jean-Marc Landau, who supported us a lot, encouraged us to add electrical effects, world influence, while infusing our own sounds. It was he who made us discover Ibiza. We must know that on stage we play everything. There is no computer or sampler.
Trance has a planer and hypnotic connotation?
It has always been found that it is among the Celts with the help of their bagpipes, the African Transen led by drums and voodoo rites. She spoke during pagan holidays. Then the hippies left San Francisco in 1968 for Europe. The psychedelic movement has arisen. In India, Trance Goa celebrations are born. A break after the Woodstock effect, the children in the old hippies launched later on by the current techno and house, "psytrance".
Our Natural Trance is inspired by the modern world and these older worlds. But we are modest compared to musicians who are big names in world music. Instruments that symbolize the most revised culture are mixed in Salvador de Bahia, Dakar or Mali.
It's an audio and visual show?
Yes, the performance is carried by us musician, but also the lighting engineer, the techniques sound and sound. Whole united in a real performance dance, songs and effects light with a rhythmic sequence of the pieces. A real hearing and visual trip!
You shot abroad?
Yes in Japan, Morocco, USA, Sweden, India, but also as part of this tour in Romania, Hungary and Israel. But especially throughout France and all corners. We have played at several festivals. Although originally, everything starts from Brittany. We made us famous thanks to this region. Our distributor is Breton.
Several dates are full, how is your audience's profile? Nostalgic in May 1968, young ravers?
We have attracted many generations of all genres and styles. Our message is heard by freelancers, travelers, dreams, those who live in an alternative way, even the "control freak" and 15-25 years old who know our words and yet have few references to the 70's.
Do you have a new album in preparation or an idea of its color?
We work with songs, but we must finish this tour before. We would like to explore the East African world of Maasai.
