Number of kilometers running to record outback

Most kilometers were driven by passenger cars in 2017. "This reason was 119.1 billion kilometers, which is a substantial increase of 14.3 percent compared with 2002," says Marjolein Jaarsma from Statistics Sweden, which publishes the latest figures in the Annual Monitor road Vehicles. "This growth is mainly due to the increase in the number of registered passenger cars, with 9.1 million units 20.1 percent higher than fifteen years earlier."

It is striking that the number of kilometers driven does not match the increase in the parking lot. The average number of kilometers driven per car decreased from 13 700 in 2002 to 13 000 fifteen years later. Private individuals drove especially less by car compared with 2002 (-6.2 percent).

Driving ability in the elderly

Jaarsma says that this does not surprise her. "It's mainly because older people continue to drive a lot longer, but they travel less kilometers, so the average is decreasing. Young people who have a car and live in the city also take the tram or bike more often and therefore negatively affect the number."

The 980,000 Dutch delivery cars together traveled 17.7 billion kilometers last year. This is an increase of 3.4 percent compared with the previous year.

Freight transport actually decreased

Unlike cars and trucks, there has been less driving with heavy trucks. "The number of kilometers last year was 5.6 percent below the level of 2002," says Jaarsma. "The number of lorries increased by 3.7 percent to 226,000 in 15 years."

Dutch buses traveled 3 891 fewer kilometers by 691.6 million kilometers in 2017 than fifteen years earlier.
