11 million children under five years die of pneumonia in 2030, according to a new study.
More than 880,000 children – mostly under two years – died of pneumonia only 2016.
Based on forecasts based on current trends, more than 10.8 million children under five years will die of the disease for the next twelve years, according to a study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA and the Redd Barna relief organization.
It is generally only the older population in developed countries affected by the disease. In less developed countries most children are affected. Among the countries that will be affected are Nigeria and India, where 1.7 million children will die from the disease, according to the study. The study also estimates that 700,000 children die in Pakistan and 635,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The researchers concluded that 4.1 million children can be saved if the vaccination program has been intensified and more people have access to antibiotics.
