The reconciliation between work and family has taken place on the public agenda, but when Portuguese is asked if they feel barriers to combining the two lives, the majority say no. Neither child interferes with work, nor does work create barriers to childcare.
According to a survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) with 1.6 million workers with children under the age of 15 (or with other persons), 84.3% of cases were guaranteed that responsibility had no effect on current occupations.
In addition, 76.6% of respondents do not feel the obstacles to reconcile their family life with their professional lives. Among the minorities who have difficulty conciliation – 22.4% – the problems are unpredictable (6.8%), long working hours (5.1%) and long and strenuous work (3.3%).
In most cases, companies facilitate working hours, where 55.9% of respondents say they can usually change the time of entry or exit (at least one hour) to meet their children's needs.
It's harder to apologize for a full day's work without having to take a vacation or leave. In this case, only 38.7% of workers say that it is "generally possible" to leave work for the entire day. For 58.5%, this hypothesis is rare or impossible.
The INE survey was conducted in parallel with the employment survey of 6.3 million people between 18 and 64 years. Of these, 34% are responsible for children under 15 years or other dependent persons.
