Stockholm and Calgary, together with Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo, are the three resorts that celebrate to win the Winter Olympics 2026.
In Canada, referendums have been held repeatedly as a candidate for the Olympics, and on the two previous occasions, the campaigns – Calgary 1998 and Vancouver 2010 – received green light.
However, this year's campaign has a big headwind because of high costs that are largely due to taxpayers.
"That's what I understood, what's the difference to the concept we have," says Brisius.
Stockholm has a budget of SEK 13 billion, where taxpayers will not have to stand for a single krone as it is supposed to be. Calgary's budget is equivalent to SEK 36.5 million, where a large part is supposed to be paid by taxpayers in the city, the region and the state.
"There have been comments that" this has been a jump to fear "or that we somehow believe that Calgary is unable to organize the games, and it has never been a part of our arguments. We are absolutely sure that Calgary can do it, it's a matter if we should or even want it, "says Erin Waite at the no-page, to Calgary Sun.
Calgary's mayor Naheed Nenshi is a proponent of the yes side, and does not believe in accident cops who warn of shining costs. When Canada Vancouver organized the 2010 2010 project, it returned with tens of millions of dollars, despite a relatively modest cost of the equivalent of 64 billion.
– What we are trying to prove is that we will not be Pyeongchang, Sochi or even Vancouver. We can organize the OS at a much more affordable cost for taxpayers, "he told AFP.
Although the referendum is not binding, both sides assume that the election results will determine if the city continues with its application. The city's electoral authority is set for a high voter participation of 715,000 that appears at the urns today.
"It would be sad if Calgary disappeared. We know they are very talented and have done a good job and worked out the best possible concept based on their prerequisites, "says Brisius.
