Eating "ultra-processed foods" such as pizza, burgers, ready meals, sugary drinks and processed meats can lead to an early death, according to a new study.
Although we already know what you eat, can affect your weight, mood and energy levels, the disturbing new research findings find that poor food choices ultimately kill you.
"Ultra-treated" food is defined as something made with an industrial procedure, for example, adding chemicals, heat treatment or dehydration.
The study, which looked at nearly 45,000 middle-aged people, found eating such foods associated with deaths from heart disease, cancer and other diseases.
An increase of 10% in the consumption of these foods was associated with a 14% increase in the risk of dying from one of these non-infectious diseases (so-called because they are not contagious).
"Ultra-processed foods contain more ingredients," investigator Dr. Laure Schnabel, a nutritional epidemiologist at Paris-Sorbonne University, explained.
"They are usually ready to heat and eat, affordable and hyper-edible.
"Examples are mass-produced and packaged snacks, sugary drinks, bread, confectionery, ready meals and processed meats."
Dr. Schnabel continued: "Ultra-processed foods are generally energy-tight, rich in refined carbohydrates, saturated fats and salt and contain low dietary fiber.
"These features have been associated with several non-infectious diseases, which are the main causes of mortality."
Artificial sweeteners, food packaging and food additives such as titanium dioxide have also been associated with these diseases.
A survey last year showed that 50% of the food sold in the UK is ultra-processed, compared to 46% in Germany and only 14% in France.
