Plan for Big Laser "to attract aliens to Earth"

Stephen Hawking warned that announcements foreigners were a very horrible idea – like putting up a sign saying "ATTACK HERE".

But researchers from MIT say we could use existing laser technology to create a "guy" that can be seen by aliens up to 20,000 light years away.

The researchers suggest that if we focused a powerful laser through a huge telescope (up to 147 feet) it would be visible to alien astronomers (even in the radiation from our sun).

If foreign astronomers discovered the signal, we could also use it to send a message in the Morse Code, says MIT researcher James Clark.

Clark says, "If we were able to succeed in closing a handshake and start communicating, we could flash a message at a data rate of about a few hundred pieces per second, which would come in a few years."

Clark suggests that laser / telescopic contraction can be built on the moon – to avoid dangers like the powerful beam that strikes spacecraft flying overhead.

Clark says, "I wanted to see if I could take the types of telescopes and lasers we are building today and make a detective firefighter of them.

"It was generally a feasibility study. Whether this is a good idea, it's a discussion for future work.

Professor Stephen Hawking was a vowel opponent in attempting to "notify" or contact foreigners directly.

Professor Hawking thinks this is a horrible idea, because all the aliens high tech to get our message and travel here may well crush us without mercy.

He said, "If foreigners visit us, the outcome would be a lot like when Columbus landed in America, which did not turn out well for the Indians."
