Orbiter is tasked with investigating meta sources on Mars, which may or may not be a product of biological activity on the red planet.
The European Space Agency / Roscosmo's joint spacecraft Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) has returned its first photos of the Mars surface. Images made by the spacecraft's Color and Stereo Imaging System (CaSSIS) are images of NASA's InSight farmer, Columbus crater and a strange & # 39; hair & # 39; structure with almost biological appearance.
This is the first time a European spacecraft has the image of NASA's lands, says the Science Alert report. The spacecraft, heat shield and parachute can be seen as small dots on the surface of the planet. Lander's landing motors are marked as a larger patch.
Earlier, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter – which arrived at the Red Planet in 2018 – returned images of the lander, said the University of Bern press release.
Another amazing image is a strange hair-like structure that appears as a suggestive biological form. NASA researchers believe the structure may be "hundreds or even thousands of lesser martin tornadoes", also known as "dustbeds". The image is presented in false color for better contrast.
"In actual color, the strips will be dark red," the press release said.
TGO, developed by Russia's Roscosmos and European Space Agency, is part of the ExoMars program dedicated to finding and exploring sources of methane and water vapor, which are said to exist in the Martian atmosphere.
The presence of methane may indicate either biological or seismological activity. If methane traces were discovered in connection with propane or ethane, it would be suggested that life once existed on Mars. However, if methane is found together with sulfur dioxide, it will indicate geological activity.
