Omega 3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of premature birth, find Cochrane review



An increased intake of omega 3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) during pregnancy may reduce the risk of premature birth, a new Cochrane review1 have found.

Researchers looked at 70 randomized studies (with 19 927 women with low, mixed or high risk of poor pregnancy score) to investigate the role of long-chain omega 3 fats to reduce the risk of premature birth. They focused in particular on docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in oily fish and fish oil.
