YouTube has a tradition of making a Rewind video at the end of each year, which reuses some of the biggest highlights of the outbound platform. It did the same in 2018, but the viewers did not like it a bit. The 2018 Rewind video actually ended up breaking the record for the most eerie video on YouTube. It broke the record only a week after it was released in December and so far has totaled 15 million dislikes. The feedback was high and clear from users, and YouTube has now noted.
The video was criticized by both fans and creators as they felt that it did not exactly display the current culture on the platform. It had lots of famous creators hanging around and participating in the cringeworthy sketches together, but some of the greatest creators (* cough * PewDiePie * cough *) were not even mentioned in passing, let alone included.
There was no mention of the PewDiePie vs T-Series match that has imprisoned a good portion of YouTube's audience. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki referred to the criticism in a post on the company's official blog and said even her children told her that YouTube's 2018 Rewind was "cringey".
She promised that the company will do better in 2019 and added that "We hear you not showing exactly the year's key moments, nor did it reflect the YouTube you know. We will better tell our story in 2019. "
